Finally getting to post my third piece for this year. Had great expectations to do all of the 12 days of Christmas pictures but this year has been a real busy one for me and the three french hens are as far as I got. I have decided to not do the bead journal next year. I will try and finish this project first . Please check my blog funky beading for updates on what I am doing. Will try and do more blogging next year. Will keep checking on what everyone is doing. See you in 2012. Lise

Falling Leaves

November....the temps are dropping, the wind is blowing and the leaves are jumping off the trees in what seems like a competition to see how far they can fly until touching ground or which one can stick their landing on the first try.

Checkin In...

Hi everyone!

For many reasons, I seem to be a behinder this year, with only 8 pieces complete. I've been quilting, knitting and writing, but not beading for a while. However, last Tuesday, joy of joys, I finally got back to my beads! Soon I hope to complete September's BJP and move along to October.

In the meantime, I have registered for BJP 2011! I am SO looking forward to a new year, this time with no pre-planned theme or self-imposed "rules." By giving myself some rules this year, I learned a lot and discovered some new likes and dislikes about my art. But, now I'm tired of restricting myself to working on felt and bored with the words. Next year? No rules!

Have YOU registered yet? I hope so! If not and you're planning on it, better do it today, cuz the deadline is fast approaching.

You might want to check my current Beadlust post about getting a hard copy of your blog printed. It's here.

Cheers and beady blessings,
Robin A.

BJP on Facebook

Are you on Facebook? If so, please check out the new BJP Facebook page and share the link with your friends. Hopefully you'll all "like" the page also! You're welcome to post on the page if you'd like to share something bead related. Don't worry - it's not a replacement for the BJP blogs! Since so many people are on Facebook it's just another way to get the word out about the BJP and encourage beaders and wanna-be beaders to join the 2011 project.

It really doesn’t matter which one you’re on but it does matter that you register in time. If you haven’t sent your request in by then you’re out of luck for 2011!

Maybe you’re putting it off because you aren’t caught up for this year? That’s ok, finishing 2010 isn’t a requirement to join 2011. Check out this link for registration details and don’t delay!

BJP 2011!

It's time to make your plans to join the 4th annual Bead Journal Project! The 2011 BJP will run from January 2011 through December 2011. Registration will begin November 8, 2010 and close on December 8, 2010. General registration information is available at the BJP website. If you’d like to register, please send a request to our registration angel at beadjournalreg11@gmail.com.

The brain child of internationally known bead artist Robin Atkins, the first Bead Journal Project, which began in June of 2007, included 241 women and 1 man from 13 different countries, who were dedicated and committed to creating 12 bead journal "pages", one per month, for a year.

The BJP is about your personal development through visual journaling using any media and techniques you desire, providing each journal piece includes some beading (usually bead embroidery) and all 12 pieces are the same size. Rules are minimal: the commitment you are making is to yourself and your personal growth through art.

Special BJP blogs are used as a means for members to support each other throughout the process. They are used to post pictures of completed pieces, technical questions, or links to participant blogs. Each BJP member will be invited to be a participant on the group blog, but it is not required to read or post to the BJP blog or to have your own blog or website. All are welcome no matter what your level of bead embroidery experience! Please register early!

Lagging Far Behind

After biting off far more than I could chew in terms of projects in March and April, I'm not sure I'm going to catch up before the end of the year. I will, however, give it a try... once I move house in the beginning of November.

I did manage to finally completely finish my March journal project, including beading the necklace on which the yoke hangs, and I'm really pleased with it. Of necessity, the next pieces will be much smaller and simpler, and next year I intend to work in manageable units every month, instead of having one piece eat up 4 months! I'm hoping to at least get through 2-3 more pages/pieces this year.

I'm trying not to consider this a "major bead fail," but instead to see it as a learning experience. I'd never tried bead embroidery before, and I've fallen in love with the art, so even if my first year is a bust in terms of steady production, I think I come out way ahead, and I'm already excited about next year. In 2011 I'll be teaching an Art Journaling workshop twice a month, and I'd like to combine small bead journal pieces with the rest of my journaling efforts. We'll see how that goes...

In the meantime, I've been utterly inspired by everyone else's work, and in awe of your productivity.

Fun bead assortments for young and old.

First I adore glass beads and second I have absolutely NO affiliation with this company except as a customer having discovered their bead assortments several years ago.... http://tinyurl.com/2ebltsg For a ridiculously low price you get a kilo of mixed beads. This is a large commercial baking tray that this kilo is on and I ordered
3 other kilos besides this one. The only catch is they are only available sporadically and if you miss them it might be 6 months before they are offered again... Obviously they are sweepings from a bead factory but in all colors, shapes, and sizes and even occasional lampwork beads...
I did so because I ordered 4 kilos several years ago and once separated I had trays of beads of every color of the rainbow. and enough to last for all I wanted to do and to share with friends... I was getting low and I missed them when they were available in the spring and had to wait until now.
I particularly like making jewelry with mismatched beads such as these necklaces.. so they are perfect for me but if you know of anyone working with youth groups and any craft group they would be a joyful activities for Christmas bazaars. They would make great needle fobs, key holders, and bookmarks.. In fact if I were still teaching kindergarten I would put them out for the children to sort, string, and learn their colors... They won't be available long but you can get on their list and they notify you when they will be offered ... They also sell other odd assortments of spacers and gemstones....but I love the glass.

Adding Your Page to 2010 Gallery

Now that we are in October if you have 8 pages done you can send your images to me to start your 2010 Member's Gallery page. Click on this link to find the instructions, Adding A Member Page.

Donations have fallen short of what it cost to keep the website running. I have covered those costs, and put in the time to make the website. If we all gave just a dollar it would be covered, we all spend way more than that on beads.

If you have any questions, there is a link to my email on the Add A Member Page.

Thanks
Brenda

Bead Show Recommendations

I will be traveling to Arizona and Nevada in February 2011 and was wondering if anybody knew of any upcoming bead shows that will be in the area of Tucson or Las Vegas.

My bead journal project has been stalled as I did not like the original shape I selected, but have since rethought it, and will be blogging and posting some pictures soon.

Hugs...

2007-2008 BJP News!

I applied a couple of weeks ago to the Southern Highland Craft Guild - it's a juried membership with a two-part jury process. The first part is an Image Jury. You send them 5 photographs of your work and then you either get a letter of approval or you get your photos back.

I got an approval letter today! I am currently a member of this year's BJP, but due to some personal things going on with me this year, I have not actually been doing any bead embroidery. However, one of the images I sent in was my project from the 2007-2008 BJP, which I titled Elemental:

The second part of the process is an Object Jury, where you send them 5 pieces and they do a final selection. I will be in the January 21, 2011 Object Jury, so it will be a while still before I know whether I made it, but I am very excited and optimistic.

I currently have only one piece completed that isn't jewelery (my framed Elemental bead embroidery piece) so I might use the next three months to complete another mixed media piece. I made bead embroidered inchies for the 2008-2009 BJP and they would make some really nice wall art along with some fabric. I just wish I had enough time to do all of the things running around in my head right now!

So, anyway, I just wanted to share with you all (especially Robin - thank you!!!) how much the BJP has meant to me and how it has helped me evolve as an artist. I'm not sure when I'll be able to complete my 2010 BJP, but I do plan on finishing. I've really enjoyed following everyone else with their projects. :)

Next Year

Some of you have started asking about BJP 2011...

I'm sorry that I haven't addressed this earlier. In my personal life, things have been (and continue to be) up and down a bit lately. My attentions are drawn elsewhere and I've not kept up with blogs in the way I'd like.

So, I'm torn. Part of me wants to continue leading the BJP for another year; part of me feels the need to step down, to continue making one visual journal piece every month, but not to organize and shepherd the BJP program. Sitting on the fence, thinking I can do it one moment and needing to be released from the responsibility the next, is what has delayed notice about it.

I see no immediate resolutions to the personal issues in my life. Therefore, probably the best thing is to open the door for somebody else to take over. I am willing to act as a consultant/advisor, and am also willing to let go of the program as I designed it. In other words, any past participant who would like to take it on, is welcome to alter the program to suit their own style of leadership or run it with the same guidelines and system as we use now.

One other possibility is to take a year-long break and see how things look for 2012 to start again.

I need to know if there are volunteers to take over and/or what you think of the idea of taking a break. Go ahead and state your thoughts by making a comment here (of any length)... or you can email me privately (robin[at]robinatkins[dot]com).

Again, I'm sorry and apologize for my need to let go at this time. Thanks for giving some thought to this and for participating this year!

Making a Change for Art!

Hi all,
I"ve just made a significant change in my life and have posted about it here on my blog - although I'm not working with beads but mainly creating sculptural forms with fabric as my main focus, I will be making lots more art and writing about my journey! (I'm SURE beads will find their way into my creations!!

August BJP is on my Blog!

Hi everyone!

BJP, Robin Atkins, detail of August piece
I just posted my August piece (detail above) here.

I've been missing on the BJP blog scene and feel very badly about it. The reasons are partly personal issues in my life right now and a ton of other obligations, projects, house guests, travel, etc. that have kept me waaaay too busy. There's more of all that on the horizon, but for the next three days, I hope plan to get caught up reading your blogs and seeing all the creative work being done in the BJP!!! And later this week, I want to will write another post about one way to finish BJP pieces that can give them a place in the fine art world.

Reminder... Once you have completed 8 BJP pieces for the year, you are eligible to put them on our BJP website on your own personal page!!! (Here's how your personal page will look... mine from the first year.) There are directions for how to send in your pictures on the website, here. (These are actually directions for last year's BJP, but they are the same for this year.) I look forward to seeing some of your pages and pictures soon. It's so neat to see them all together in a group, don't you think?

Please forgive my recent absence from active blogging... I'm sooooooooo excited to have a day to catch up and see your work!

Beady hugs,
Robin A.

BJP July 2010

Yesterday I made a large piece of needlefelt.

For me it is always a surprise what it looks when I think I am ready.
I don't have a special plan, just start and see where it ends.
I do it just the same as I draw a free hand mandala.
In this part I saw a sunburst.
Influence from the heatwave which is in Europe?
The size is a CD.

"Carolyn Has Cabin Fever" My friend Carolyn has had this remarkable green carpet for about 3o years. It has helped her through many a long, dark winter in Alaska.
My bead journal project uses hand tracings from people who have helped me throughout my life. This is "The Neighbor." Bone, stone, crystal, and seed beads on wool felt and velvet. 8 1/2 x 11 inches.

May follows April right!! So here comes April followed by May!!

Yours truly's been struggling to get my April and  May entries here on this blog and on my own blog May follows April.........

Life's been very busy, I thought retirement meant you had lots & lots of free time, doesn't seem to be happening here, at least not right now, probably because spring/summer is upon us.  Our life is full & fun, so that is all that really counts, besides we love sharing it with our good friends, you know who you are.

Presently am busy on the weekend's selling my art goodies at our local Farmer's Market!!

Everyone have a safe "summer"....which will arrive I believe on June 21st.

Enjoy

PS I am enjoying viewing everyone's beaded work, you all ROCK!!!!!!

Progress on May BJP

I did get started on May's BJP while I was in Alaska but I have no hopes of getting it done by the end of the month... I have 2 other projects that need to be postmarked before May 31 and this can wait and be late. Stitching time is practically nonexistent this month competing with absolute necessary outside chores...
We have both the Western Bluebird and the Mountain Bluebird in our area.. It is usually the red-breasted Western Bluebird that have nested here although I haven't seen any this year.

May

I've posted a photo and information on my next piece on my blog. http://focus-on-fiber.blogspot.com/

Saturday, May 8, 2010

I know I've been MIA lately but I'm still here. I spent the beginning of the year in Australia (my first piece on the left which I've already talked about). I was also there for the month of February where I was forced to take a good look at myself and my family & what everything means (the reason for the glasses & the mirror. Hard to see but there is a picture of my family in the picture frame).

My March piece is not completed yet but will be soon. I'm incorporating buttons I made with my Dad while in Australia.

The final piece on the right is for April. I was in Hong Kong for this money where I turned 50! Where have the years gone. I used an opal to represent each person in my family - a precious stone for my precious family.

I decided to sew my pieces to an ultra suede band that slips over the front cover of my journal. Seems to work the best. I have been writing for the month in these journals. Unfortunately they have ended up being extremely personal (something I didn't expect) so I won't be showing those pages :)

delete

delete I don't get how to post. It goes to the wrong place!

Finished my March "page", yeah!

And now I have a dilemma.  I haven't even made the vessel yet for April, so I have nothing on which I can bead.  Perhaps later this week I can get to it (keeping my fingers crossed...).

Here are the 4 sides of my March vessel.  And you can check my blog to see what my inspiration was.

I've gotten very far behind in viewing everyone's work so far.  Boy oh boy, when I can finally slow down a bit, I'm going to have a fabulous time catching up!

Long Absence and A Question

I'm still here!  You probably don't even remember me as I'm still working on January!!!!  But, I've posted in my blog with an updated photo, some news, and a question about my piece (probably a question that BJP participants have debated before).  Happy Spring!!

Under Sea Fantasy March BJP

I have finally completed my BJP for March. After not knowing where to begin, I resolved the problem by Embellishing a piece that I created using my Embellishing machine. I worked up a piece of felted material with all sorts of bits. I started with wool roving and added silk velvet, red silk, thread scraps and other bits of flotsam from my sewing table. For pictures and the rest of the story, you can go here!!

Hopefully, I will be able to accomplish my BJP for April before the end of April!!

Doing the "Done" Dance for February!

February is completely beaded now - yay!  I just have to wet and reshape it a bit.  Then I shall get some good photos rather than the outdoor shots I've been taking with my little cheapo camera.  And I'm happily beading away on March... finally!  I guarantee, it won't be as ambitious as February was...

Here's a link to both sides of my February piece - with a bunch of other pictures in that post of my "pink" world here in the S.F. Bay Area, another vessel I'm working on, and some beads I made Saturday.  February finale!

If I can ever get through this tech job with its hairy deadlines, I'll move along with my projects much more quickly - oy!  But I'm really not pressuring myself, I just take things one day at a time.  Hopefully this week I can check out all the progress everyone else is making - now THERE's some pressure.  LOL!

the start of my bj for March plus beading a quiltlet

This is the base I created for my March journal, the fabric is hand dyed, the birds are stenciled on. I surrounded them with unwoven dyed wool. I'm looking forward to beading this journal.

I painted this fabric, cut the fish out of freezer paper and stenciled it on using gold paint.
I felt it needed something more, so I beaded the dark waves. Then it looked out of balance, so I made the circle. The corners looked a bit empty, so I drew ornaments for them. Took me almost a week to get all the beading done. I like the addition of the star fish. Its a real one, I bought it at a fair last month. I have 3 silver colored fish charms. I would like to add those too somehow.

Invitation

Hi Everybody!

I've been gone 6 weeks (pre-vacation, 2 wks in AZ, post-vacation and then the coughing virus... now finally, I'm back! I'm also seriously a behinder.... Today is set aside for catching up on BJP blogs. Tomorrow I promise you, I'll get to work on my March BJP... that's a PROMISE!

Now, the invitation...

I am a contributing writer for Creative Beading magazine
(Woodlands Publishing, Australia) and would like to mention the bead journal
project in my news column if this is ok with you. If so I would love some images
jpeg 2mb in size if possible. Many thanks
Regards

I replied to Sue that she's welcome to write about the BJP for her magazine. However, I have no control over the images posted by our members. I suggested to her that I would post her invitation on our blog and anybody who is interested can send her an image or two directly. So there you have it... I hope some of you will respond!

Pictures on our three BJP blogs ~ Just a reminder that you can now post pictures of your BJP pieces on our three BJP blogs! If you have a personal blog, it's really fun to post a teaser, an image that shows only a small detail of your piece, here and a link to a post on your own blog where we can see the pictures of your full piece.

I'm so impressed with all the BJP work I'm seeing this year. Everyone is stretching, getting out of the box, learning... It's amazing, beautiful and creative!!!!

APRIL PIECE

I've just completed my April BJP. I used green & yellow to signify the new leaves and flowers that are breaking forth this month. The yellow can also be for the pollen that is covering everything right now. ;-)
The cross is for Easter...The Celebration of My Risen Lord!
Happy Beading!
